JOB TITLE: MANAGER, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
DEPARTMENT: GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS AND MARKETING
REPORT TO: VICE-PRESIDENT, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

JOB STATEMENT

Reporting to the Vice President of Government Affairs works under the direction of the Vice-President on public policy issues, assists and provides support of the implementation of the Chamber’s government affairs strategy. Coordinates and assists with the Chamber’s positions and statements on political and policy issues relevant to the business community at the local, state and federal levels. Assistants in helping advocate the Chamber positions, including lobbying activities before local governments and at the State Legislature. Proactively works with the Government Affairs Committee, the volunteer committee charged with overseeing the Chamber’s policy program. Assists and helps with internal and external written and verbal communications.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/OBJECTIVES:

  • Primarily responsible assisting and providing support with the Chamber’s government strategies, which are developed at the direction of the Vice President of Government Affairs
  • Primarily responsible for assisting the Chamber on government affairs matters at the local level as well as at the state and federal levels of government as directed by the Vice President of Government Affairs
  • Testifies as needed on behalf of the Chamber with local government bodies and in the State Legislature in coordination with the Vice President of Government Affairs and the Director of Government Affairs
  • Responsible for assisting the government affairs department in social media engagement with members and policy makers by coordinating with the communications department
  • Assists in providing analysis/interpretations of local government issues and State legislative initiatives as needed
  • Assist with the Chamber’s policy committees as needed in regards to research and coordinating with Government Affairs Analyst as directed by the Vice President of Government Affairs
  • Responsible for drafting policy positions to be approved by the Vice President of Government Affairs and Director of Government Affairs
  • Researches state and local business-related political issues to help keep members informed of key issues and to assist in the development of policy positions as directed by the Vice President of Government Affairs
  • Engages and assistants with the annual Washington, DC Fly-In with the entire Government Affairs department including research and drafting of policy memos
  • Writes and researches articles for Chamber publications related to policy and political involvement and policy memos such as the weekly emails, the Chamber’s magazine, legislative reports, federal briefing books and local government summaries
  • Assists the Vice President of Government Affairs and Director of Government Affairs by reviewing ordinances, resolutions, agreements proposed by local government and state government regulations that impact the business community and providing summaries for the Vice President of Government Affairs and Director of Government Affairs
  • Provides staff support to the Government Affairs Committees, Public Affairs Committee, Nevada Business Roundtable, and the Southern Nevada Forum
  • Participates on cross function project teams, in support of Chamber initiatives such as the events, marketing, and communication departments
  • Attends and participates in sales and sponsorship meetings to provide government affairs background on issues to membership and events staff
  • Performs additional special projects as assigned by the Vice-President of Government Affairs
  • Other duties as assigned

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Full-time position with ability to work flexible hours, including travel
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree in political science or a related work in field, preferred
  • Preferred 1 – 3 years’ experience in the public policy arena
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior staff management experience preferred
  • Proficient in Word and Excel, ability to quickly master other computer programs
  • Self-starter, highly organized, multi-tasked
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Professional demeanor and presentation of self
  • Capable of maintaining sensitive/confidential information
  • Excellent time management, communications, decision-making, presentation, human relations, and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse group of internal and external contacts
  • Prior work experience in the public policy arena, significant understanding of various aspects of government including local, state and federal preferred
  • Full-time position with ability to work flexible weekly hours and weekends as required
  • Some travel required including to the State Capitol during the legislative session
  • Must have an understanding of government politics, public policy and functions in local government, State of Nevada and Washington D.C.
